Aims

Home Economics is one element of Learning for Life and Work (LLW).

It is a subject through which you will develop many skills, in particular the practical skills involved in planning, preparing, cooking and serving food.

KS3

Throughout Key Stage 3 you will study the three key concepts of Home Economics. They are:

  • Healthy Eating

  • Independent Living

  • Home and Family Life

Your learning will develop the core skills and knowledge around the themes of:

  • Diet (Food and drink)

  • Consumer Awareness

  • Cooking (food preparation and handling skills)

  • Food Safety

  • Active Lifestyles (physical activity)

During our theory and practical lessons, you will have lots of opportunities to develop your Communication, ICT and Literacy and Numeracy Skills.

You will also develop the following Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities:

  • Working with Others

  • Managing Information

  • Self-Management

  • Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

  • Being Creative.

KS4

KS4 courses offer all students the opportunities to build on the skills and capabilities developed through the delivery of the KS3 curriculum.

The option choices provide academic and vocational routes to best suit all learning styles.

  • CCEA GCSE Food and Nutrition

  • CCEA GCSE Health and Social Care

  • OCN Level 2 Vocational Pathways in Hospitality

Post 16

At Post-16, CCEA GCE Health and Social Care is offered. This course is completed over two years through a combination of exam and coursework units.
